Firefighters rescue family of 3 during apartment fire in east Kansas City
Fire department crews evacuated a family of three while putting out a blaze in an east Kansas City apartment building Friday morning.
The Kansas City Fire Department responded around 5 a.m. to a reported fire in the 2400 block of East 9th Street, near Olive Street, according to a press release.
Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins said four people were outside when crews arrived and told firefighters that people were still inside, potentially unaware of the fire.
Crews observed heavy fire from the three-story building, with fire going through the roof of the structure, the press release said.
Four handlines, or hand-held water hoses, were used to put out the blaze. During searches of the building, crews breached an upper floor apartment and evacuated two adults and one child out of the building safely, Hopkins said.
The fire was put out about a half hour after crews arrived. No injuries were reported, according to the fire department.
Red Cross was ordered for the family of three who were evacuated. The family was evaluated by paramedics and released.
There was no information available Friday morning about the extent of damage that had been caused by the fire. KCFD ordered the city’s dangerous buildings department to evaluate the damage.
The Kansas City Police Department’s Bomb and Arson unit were called on to investigate the cause of the fire.
