Ahead of Kansas City concerts, Chappell Roan hits vintage shop, brunch spot

On Thursday morning, Cortney Fangman’s husband told her to make sure their Daisy Lee Vintage shop in Kansas City’s Crossroads looked especially perfect “in case Chappell comes in.”

That would be Chappell Roan, the “Midwest Princess” who will perform in front of about 60,000 fans on Friday and Saturday.

And lo! Cortney and her husband, Caleb, “manifested it,” she said.

Around the lunch hour, Roan and a group of friends walked through the door. The store’s content creator, Gabrielle Kearney, greeted the Grammy winner as she would any other customer with a hello and a smile, then let her shop without fuss.

“She just walked in with her group of friends. They were very chill, very calm,” Kearney said. “They were super nice. So crazy. I think it’s really cool that she’s just walkin’ around exploring the city casually. I love that for her.”

Roan found the store, at 122 W. 18th St., through a Daisy Lee customer she met nearby carrying a purse from the store. Roan admired the vintage bag and the woman told her where she bought it.

Before she shopped, Roan and a small group lunched at nearby Mildred’s. Thursday evening the cafe posted photos of Roan posing for photos at the restaurant.

“Maybe we manifested it?? AH! Thank you Chappell Roan for stopping in Mildred’s today!!” read the Instagram post. “We’re here for you if you need more fuel for your 2 sold out shows. KC is rooting for you!”

The Fangmans have owned Daisy Lee for eight years. They have a store in Lawrence, too. They sell upcycled vintage items — the ‘90s and Y2K eras are hot right now — which are right in Roan’s fashion wheelhouse.

The pieces are one-of-a-kind, so Roan wouldn’t have found the exact purse she admired.

Kearney said she could tell Roan was with friends and not band members “because of how they were bantering.” Roan didn’t have a security person with her, she said.

Kearney, who sings locally, has met other stars — including Charli xcx and Taylor Swift’s ex, British singer/songwriter Matty Healy — through her former band. So she was careful not to accost Roan with fan fervor and let her shop in peace.

Roan didn’t buy anything. But before she left Kearney asked if she could take a picture with her for the shop.

Roan was happy to do so.

Kearney, who is 5’2,” said she and Roan are about the same height. The singer’s petite frame didn’t surprise her, Kearney said, “because I feel like everyone I meet who is famous is way shorter” than they appear on stage.

Neither Fangman nor Kearney were able to get tickets to the concert.

But at least they have this one claim to fame.

The store’s Instagram post reads: “Welp we can officially all die happy.”

“She said she loved the store. That was real nice,” Kearney said. “It’s really cool for us to have somebody like her (from Missouri) doing what she’s doing, in front of 60,000 people. That’s crazy!”
