We dined at Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce’s KC steakhouse. Take a look

What’s the MVP of upscale steakhouse 1587 Prime?

Perhaps it’s the luxurious tunnel walk entrance, with dim lighting and heavy doors. Or maybe it’s the nightly smooth-playing jazz band, martini cart or juicy A5 New York strip steaks.

The true answer, of course, is ultimately up for diners to decide.

The new steakhouse — a collaboration between Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and hospitality group Noble 33 — hopes to be as much of a hit with Chiefs fans as the franchise itself.

With its opening date of Sept. 17 rapidly approaching, The Star got a preview of the space and menu Thursday evening. The restaurant is still in an invite-only, soft opening phase until its official debut.

Winding staircase, chandeliers

At 1500 Baltimore Ave. in the Loews Hotel, 1587 offers both scenic views and a high-end dining experience.

When customers enter the double doors to the restaurant, they’ll notice a light-up wine case wrapping around one side of the wall. Wooden slats hang from the ceiling, rippling across like water.

On the ground floor, a horseshoe bar with marble countertops and bronze chairs seats 20 patrons. Next to it, musicians play house music on an intricate tile stage. (A manager told The Star the male and female singers had been selected by audition. Their names were not immediately available Thursday night.) More banquet seating is scattered throughout the restaurant, which has a total of 238 seats between its two floors.

Up a winding, marble staircase, visitors find panoramic windows covered by curtains, an open kitchen and star-shaped, golden light fixtures. A chandelier made entirely of dripping beads hangs loosely from the ceiling.

A 40-person private dining room, complete with a private entrance, also lives upstairs. At a hardhat walkthrough of the space months ago, director of hospitality Sacha Tanha told The Star the dining room was a special request from Mahomes and Kelce.

The space was designed by New York firm The Johnson Studio at Cooper Carry, which also crafted The Stillwell bar inside the Loews.

Wagyu and Swift-inspired drink

The restaurant offers a full menu by executive chef Ryan Taylor, though prices were not available at the pre-opening event.

Appetizers include a black truffle grilled cheese, A5 Tajima wagyu beef, lobster rolls, whipped ricotta and wagyu meatballs.

Several seafood options are featured: pan-roasted wild king salmon, diver scallops, twin lobster tails, oysters, tuna tartare and more.

For steak main courses, wagyu from Snake River Farms Melba, Idaho, is offered as an 8-ounce filet or 6-ounce ribeye top cap. Petite filets from Missouri’s own Windsor Ranch and a 16-ounce bone-in strip from Foote Ranch in Manhattan, Kansas, are also on the menu, along with several other cuts.

Its largest offering: a 40-ounce wagyu Tomahawk.

Sides include a twice-baked potato (smoked gouda, creme fraiche, beef bacon, chives and black truffle), sauteed spinach, broccolini and more.

Four drinks are inspired by Kelce, Mahomes and their significant others.

The Showtime, a Coors Light syrup-flavored drink with aged rum and toasted coconut, is an ode to Mahomes. The Queen B (in reference to Brittany Mahomes) is made of Grey Goose, lychee, wildflower honey, vanilla and lemon.

The Big Yeti (Kelce’s nickname) is a bourbon-based drink with Bulleit rye, Nocino, Demerara and bitters.

And then there’s The Alchemy, an obvious nod to Taylor Swift and her song of the same title: clarified citrus vodka, Pierre Ferrand dry curacao, aronia berry, cranberry, strawberry, lime and oolong. Swift’s drink is served wrapped in steel wool, which the server ignites at the table, causing sparks to fly.

Drinks are crafted by Noble 33 beverage director Juan Carlos Santana, Michelin Guide “Exceptional Cocktails” award-winner and certified sommelier.

Born out of friendship

Las Vegas-based hospitality group Noble 33 has destinations in several other major cities: Toca Madera (Las Vegas; Houston; Scottsdale, Arizona), Casa Madera (West Hollywood, Toronto), Sparrow Italia (London, Miami) and Meduza Mediterrania (New York City).

While a steakhouse is a first for both Mahomes and Kelce, neither are strangers to the food and beverage scene. The pair are investors in restaurant and entertainment concept Chicken N Pickle, which has two locations in the Kansas City metro.

Mahomes, meanwhile, is the co-owner of Whataburger franchise KMO Burger, which brought his favorite Texas fast food chain to the metro.

And Kelce is an investor in Casa Azul tequila sodas. He and his brother, former Eagles center Jason Kelce, own light beer brand Garage Beer.

For those hoping to snag a sneak peek of Chiefs players — or Taylor Swift, the superstar fiancee of Kelce — it’s not out of the realm of possibilities.

Both the players and Swift appeared at the restaurant’s soft opening Monday. According to Us Weekly, the newly engaged couple traded “quick kisses” under the dining room’s warm light.

At the June hardhat walkthrough, Noble 33’s Tanha told The Star 1587 Prime was born through his friendship with the pair.

Tanha first met Mahomes in 2018, after the player dined at Toca Madera in West Hollywood. Both Mahomes and Kelce have dined at other Noble 33 concepts, and Tanha eventually brought up the idea of starting a restaurant with the two.

“They both were immediately like, ‘We would love to have something in Kansas City,’” he said. “They both thought a steakhouse would probably make the most sense.”

“Travis and I have become frequent visitors of Noble 33 restaurants in other cities so it only made sense to bring something special to our own community in Kansas City,” Mahomes said in a press release back in March 2024 when the restaurant was initially announced.
