Independence police are investigating a fatal crash involving a motorbike that left one person dead Thursday.
Officers responded to the crash around 9 p.m. at U.S. 24 Highway, according to a news release. An Axis M200 drove east on U.S. 24 when the driver attempted to turn north on Sterling Avenue.
A preliminary investigation shows the driver began traveling in the wrong direction on U.S. 24. The driver tried to turn north in the southbound lanes of Sterling Avenue to the Westbound U.S. 24 turn lane.
The driver allegedly failed to turn at a curve in the road and struck a concrete curb at the intersection of Sterling Avenue and U.S. 24, according to the news release. The impact caused the driver to be ejected from the motorbike.
Paramedics transported the driver to a hospital with serious injuries, where he was later pronounced dead.
The driver was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said.
Prior to the crash, Independence police officers were trying to stop the driver for multiple traffic violations, the news release said.
