Three people had to be hospitalized after a building fire in Kansas City’s Westport neighborhood Wednesday, a fire department spokesman said.

Crews with the Kansas City Fire Department responded just before 6 a.m. to the 4100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, near Westport Road, on reports of a fire. Upon arrival, crews reported heavy fire and smoke from apartments on the second floor of a three story building, said Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins, a KCFD spokesman.

The building has commercial space on the first floor and apartments on the second and third floors, Hopkins said.

Firefighters searched the building and brought three people out to safety, Hopkins said. Paramedics transported those individuals to a hospital to be evaluated for smoke inhalation.

Hopkins said that all three individuals were in stable condition Wednesday morning.

The city’s Dangerous Buildings department is on scene as part of KCFD protocol.

Fire department crews put out the blaze and its cause is under investigation.
