Multiple vehicles left the scene of a crash that left three people hurt — two with serious injuries — in Kansas City’s 18th and Vine District Tuesday, police said.

Officers responded around 6:45 p.m. to East 18th Street on a reported crash, said Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City Police Department. According to a preliminary investigation, a black Chevrolet Malibu allegedly sped east on 18th Street when it struck a white Toyota Highlander that was driving north on Indiana.

The Chevrolet then struck a gray Dodge Durango driving west on 18th Street. According to a crash report, the impact caused the Toyota to spin and travel into the westbound lanes of 18th Street.

As the Toyota spun, it struck a red Ford Taurus and a black Chrysler 200 that were both traveling west on 18th Street, according to the crash report.

Paramedics transported the driver of the Toyota to a hospital with critical injuries. A juvenile back seat passenger of the Toyota was transported to local hospital with serious injuries.

The passenger of the Chevrolet was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

All of the drivers and occupants of the Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, and Chrysler left the scene of the collision before officers arrived, Gonzalez said in an email.

The Toyota driver’s injuries remained critical Wednesday morning, Gonzalez said. The juvenile passenger of the Toyota and the passenger of the Chevrolet were still in a hospital Wednesday recovering from their injuries.

An investigation into what caused the crash is ongoing, Gonzalez said.
