A woman is dead following a shooting in south Kansas City, according to Kansas City police.

Kansas City police responded to an apartment building in the 8700 block of Countryshire Lane just before noon Tuesday, according to Kansas City police spokesperson Sgt. Phillip DiMartino. Inside, officers located a woman suffering from a gunshot wound.

The woman was declared dead at the scene, DiMartino said.

“We’re still in the preliminary stages trying to learn what led up to this, but what we do know at this point is there was an argument that led to gunfire, and that gunfire ultimately led to this woman losing her life here today,” DiMartino said.

Detectives were working on canvassing the area Tuesday afternoon, DiMartino said.

“Detectives would go door to door, looking for anyone who may have saw something, someone who may have heard something,” DiMartino said. “The surveillance footage in any homicide investigation is key, so investigators will be looking for that as well.”

The death marks Kansas City’s 91st homicide in 2025, compared to 81 homicides at this time in 2024, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings.

Many deaths in Kansas City this year have been the result of arguments, DiMartino said. He told reporters that there’s “always an opportunity to walk away.”

DiMartino said pulling the trigger doesn’t just affect the people immediately involved.

“You look around me, this is the middle of someone’s neighborhood,” DiMartino said. “This is where they come home from work. And it’s now been shattered by crime scene tape, police cars here.”

A suspect of interest was taken into custody, DiMartino said. Investigators believe there is no further danger to the public.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact homicide detectives at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS. Information submitted to the TIPS hotline remains anonymous.

There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted to the TIPS hotline.
