One of Kansas City’s free family activities is canceled this week, but visitors will have more chances to enjoy the outdoor entertainment throughout the summer.

Crown Center’s WeekEnder, a weekly free event on the shopping center’s outdoor square, usually brings out crowds for live music, food trucks and a movie to watch under the stars. Set to begin Friday, July 11, and run every Friday until Aug. 1, it will not be happening this week because of the weather.

“Due to the storms forecast for this evening during the WeekEnder outdoor movie and music event, Crown Center will cancel tonight’s event,” Crown Center spokesperson Kristi Ernsting said.

Kansas City has a chance of experiencing severe storms Friday afternoon and evening, with the greatest threats being damaging winds, hail and heavy rainfall, the National Weather Service says. The NOAA Storm Prediction Center placed the Kansas City metro under a slight risk for severe weather.

The weather means Kansas City will miss out on performance from Damien Gunn Band and a showing of the film “Twisters.”

WeekEnder will return at 6 p.m. on July 18 with a live performance from local band Honeybee; food from Kona Ice, KC Fooditude, Burnt End BBQ and Bryce’s Food Truck; and the film “Crazy Rich Asians,” which plays around 9 p.m.

The following weeks bring these bands and movies to Crown Center:

  • July 25: The Vincents; “Clueless”
  • Aug. 1: The Accidental Moguls; “Captain America: Brave New World”

Free parking is available from 6 p.m. to midnight in the Crown Center Shops garage and Pershing office garages every Friday during WeekEnder. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs.

No pets, glass containers or alcoholic beverages are allowed to be brought into the square, but visitors can purchase alcohol.
