Man dies after shooting inside Kansas City home, marking 49th homicide of year

Update: The deceased has been identified as William Porter, 42.

A man died after being shot Sunday afternoon inside a home in Kansas City’s Knoches Park neighborhood, a police spokesman said.

Officers responded to the shooting about 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the 3100 block of Spruce Avenue, said Capt. Jake Becchina with the Kansas City Police Department.

Arriving officers were directed to a home, and people inside led them to the victim, Becchina said. Officers rendered first aid until emergency medical workers came and took the victim to the hospital, where the victim died.

A preliminary investigation revealed that one or more persons were inside the home with the victim when shots were fired. The victim was struck by gunfire. The person or persons involved in the shooting left before police arrived, Becchina said.

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators gathered evidence and looked for possible witnesses to the deadly shooting.

The killing is Kansas City’s 49th homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That compares to 47 homicides reported by this time last year.
