‘It’s like a Super Bowl for us’—Record stores in KC prepare for biggest day of the year
Record Store Day is an annual event that celebrates independently owned record stores and their role in music communities. Typically held on a Saturday in April, the day features special vinyl and CD releases, promotional products, and in-store performances.
The event is usually one of the busiest days of the year for small record stores. “In terms of the attendance, I would say it is like the Super Bowl for us,” says Judy Mills, owner of Mills Record Company in Westport.
The special day was conceived in 2007 and first held in 2008 to promote the cultural significance of record stores and the vinyl format. It brings together fans, artists, and record store owners to share their passion for music and vinyl records.
One of the biggest draws are exclusive release vinyls, such as a series of limited edition Wu-Tang Clan albums with unique artwork, a Jerry Garcia album limited to 4000 copies, and a 7-inch vinyl of Taylor Swift’s song featuring Post Malone, “Fortnight.”
The exclusive releases draw in large crowds, help attract new customers who may return throughout the year, and acts as a boost between the holiday shopping season.
For record collectors, it offers the chance to acquire limited-edition releases, rare pressings, and special reissues that are often only available on Record Store Day and at participating independent stores.
These items can become highly sought after and valuable, making the day a sort of treasure hunt for collectors. The thrill of the hunt, the excitement of discovering a rare gem, and the camaraderie among fellow collectors all contribute to the unique celebration.
Different stores have added features like concert ticket giveaways, food and beverages, and live music from local bands.
