Semi hauling wastewater crashes on US 69 in Johnson County, leaving one dead

Update: U.S. 69 southbound lanes had reopened at 199th Street as of 3 p.m. Thursday.

Southbound U.S. 69 Highway is closed past 199th Street near the Johnson County and Miami County line after a fatal crash Thursday morning.

Emergency crews responded just before 7:30 a.m. to the crash, according to a KC Scout incident log.

A tractor trailer with a wastewater tank tipped over on the highway, according to Tiffany Baylark, a spokesperson with the Kansas Highway Patrol. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

One person died in the crash and another person suffered life-threatening injuries, according to a dispatcher with the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Investigators are working to determine what led to the crash.

A spokesperson with the Kansas Department of Transportation said there is not yet an estimated time for crews to reopen the road.
