Update: The deceased have been identified as Megan Aldridge, 35.

A person walking on the shoulder of a highway in Kansas City Monday afternoon died when they were hit by a passing car, according to the Kansas City Police Department.

Police responded to the hit-and-run around 3 p.m. Monday, according to Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a KCPD spokesperson. The pedestrian had been standing and walking on the outside shoulder of the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70, near the exit ramp to The Paseo, when an unknown car hit them, Gonzalez said.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the collision, the car fled the area without stopping, Gonzalez said. Police have not identified the driver responsible for the fatal crash, though an investigation is ongoing.
