Two dead in Wednesday morning crash on Shawnee highway: Police

Update: The deceased have been identified as Douglas Courtney, 62, and Shannon Courtney, 57, of Shawnee.

Two people died in a car crash on a Johnson County highway Wednesday, police said.

The crash took place around 11 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Kansas Highway 7 near West 47th Street in Shawnee, according to the Shawnee Police Department. Two cars had collided, killing both occupants of one vehicle, according to police.

The driver of the second vehicle was unhurt, police said. That driver is cooperating with SPD’s ongoing investigation into the crash.

The deceased have not yet been publicly identified while police work to notify their families.

A stretch of K-7 was closed after the crash, reopening early Wednesday afternoon.

The fatal accident was one of several crashes that took place around the metro Wednesday morning as ice coated the roads following overnight snowfall.
