Speeding driver killed in wrong way crash with Jackson County Sheriff’s deputy, police say

One person was killed in a head-on crash with a Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputy Friday, according to police.
Officers responded to a fatal crash just before 11 p.m. Friday, according to a crash report from the Kansas City Police Department. A preliminary investigation showed that a silver Honda Accord sped north in the southbound lanes of Blue Ridge Cutoff, the crash report said.
A deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office drove south on Blue Ridge Cutoff near Sni A Bar Road in a black Ford Explorer patrol vehicle. Authorities said the Honda then struck the patrol vehicle head on.
Paramedics pronounced the driver of the Honda dead at the scene.
First responders took the deputy to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the crash report said.
The deputy is recovering from his injuries, police said in the crash report. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
The crash is Kansas City’s eighth traffic fatality of 2025, according to Capt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman with KCPD. At this time last year, the city had recorded 20 traffic deaths, Becchina said.
