Firefighters battle blaze at former assisted living center in south Kansas City
Firefighters battled a blaze early Monday at the former Waterford South assisted living facility in south Kansas City, a fire department spokesman said.
Fire crews responded to the fire shortly before 7 a.m. at the single-story building in the 11500 block of Holmes Road, said Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins with the Kansas City Fire Department.
The first arriving trucks reported heavy fire coming from the building. Hopkins said fire crews had to fight the fire defensively because it had progressed and spread before their arrival.
The bulk of the fire was brought under control by 8 a.m., and crews were extinguishing hot spots, Hopkins said.
One person was taken to a hospital for evaluation of a minor cut. Others, who were without housing, were inside the building at the time of the fire, and they were able to evacuate, Hopkins said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
