Temperatures to tumble in Kansas City. Will chilly weather bring freezing drizzle, snow?
Warmer than usual weather will kick off the week in Kansas City, but a strong cold front will bring the metro crashing back to the reality that winter isn’t over.
Temperatures are expected to climb back into the 60s on Monday for the second day in a row, reaching around 64 degrees in the metro, the National Weather Service said. Kansas City typically sees temperatures around 40 degrees this time of year. The record for this date is 76 degrees, set in 1934.
A strong cold front across the northern plains is expected to surge south during the day.
“Temperatures are expected to stall or decrease behind the front,” the weather service said.
Cooler weather returns to Kansas City
Temperatures will return to normal after the front moves through, dropping to 40 degrees on Tuesday.
There will be a chance of light rain or drizzle overnight on Tuesday. With temperatures dipping to near freezing Wednesday morning, freezing rain or freezing drizzle is possible, the weather service said.
While the metro could see some freezing drizzle, the area with the greatest potential for light ice accumulations is north of the U.S. 36 highway in northern Missouri.
The weather service said a few hundredths of an inch of ice is possible, but there is uncertainty about how low surface temperatures will become.
Temperatures will rebound to the upper 40s on Wednesday and the mid-40s on Thursday.
More icing possible late in the week
Friday’s temperatures will be in the mid-40s.
Another weather system is expected to move through overnight, bringing the chance of drizzle, freezing drizzle or maybe some snow, the weather service said.
Temperatures have about a 30% chance of falling below freezing overnight Friday along Interstate 70, with probabilities increasing towards 80% near the Iowa border, the weather service said.
“Will need to keep a close eye on this system for the potential for a second icing system late week,” the weather service said.
Cooler temperatures will return to the central United States behind the weather system, leading to seasonal temperatures and dry weather on Sunday, the weather service said.
