Patrick Mahomes’ mother shares sad family news before AFC Championship Game vs. Bills
Patrick Mahomes’ grandfather has entered hospice, the Chiefs MVP quarterback’s mother revealed Friday morning.
“My dad is in hospice and I’m lost for words,” Randi Mahomes posted on Instagram Stories, adding three praying hands emojis.
She shared the news with a photo of herself with her father, Randy Martin.
She cited Colossians 3:20, a Bible passage that instructs children to obey their parents in everything because it “pleases the Lord.”
The news comes two days before Patrick Mahomes leads the Chiefs against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
If the Chiefs win, they head to New Orleans, where they will try to become the first NFL team to win three consecutive Super Bowls in Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9.
Mahomes’ mother, Debbie Bates Martin, died on April 5, 2023, two months after the Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.
Mahomes’ parents were married 53 years, according to Martin’s obituary.
The NFL mom has opened up about how devastating the loss of her mother was.
“Missing my mom so much it hurts and trying not to cry again in front of my daughter is impossible,” she tweeted two weeks after her mother died.
She shared several photos of her mom on Instagram before last year’s Super Bowl, writing: “Momma i know you are cheering today from Heaven. I miss you every single day.. i can hear you yelling ‘Go Patrick.’”
She has also shared news about her father’s health problems on social media, where she has asked for prayers.
“Prayer warriors please pray for my daddy. He is in the hospital and is not well… his name is Randy,” she tweeted on X in September.
January has been a seesaw of highs and lows for the Mahomes family.
In much happier news celebrated by thousands who follow the quarterback’s family life, Patrick’s wife, Brittany, gave birth to the couple’s third child, a daughter they named Golden Raye, on Jan. 12.
Chiefs fans were excited to see Brittany, just six days later, at GEHA Field at Arrowhead for last weekend’s AFC Divisional Round playoff game against the Houston Texans.
