Snow shovels were in high demand Monday as residents across the Kansas City metro dug out from a winter storm that dropped more than a foot of snow in some areas.

Some places in Clay County, near Bonner Springs and Basehor in Wyandotte County and parts of Olathe reported receiving 13 inches of snow. Totals varied across the region with 7.5 inches in Grain Valley on the low end.

The winter storm started with freezing drizzle on Saturday afternoon and turned to snow that night. Heavy snowfall started in the early hours Sunday which was piled into drifts by strong winds as it continued to snow through most of the day.

On Monday morning residents of the area were checking to see if they were required to make a treacherous drive to work or stay home and dig out from the storm. Schools across the metro were closed which meant some school-aged children took advantage of the fresh snow to get their sleds out.

Check out photos from around the metro as people worked—and played in the rare, heavy snowfall.
