One person died when their car crashed into a building in east Kansas City Thursday, police said.

A preliminary investigation shows a black BMW 535I was speeding north on Hardesty around 4 a.m., a crash report said. Near the intersection of Winner and Hardesty, the BMW crossed the center line and traveled north in the southbound lanes of Hardesty, the report said.

The BMW then struck a concrete traffic median, a metal traffic signal pole, and continued driving north across Winner Road, according to the crash report. The BMW traveled up a grassy hill and ramped across a private driveway. The car then struck a building before coming to a stop.

The driver of the BMW was pronounced dead at the scene.

A front seat passenger was taken to a hospital, where they are recovering from serious injuries, police said.

Gonzalez said the crash is Kansas City’s 93rd traffic fatality of 2024. At this time last year, the city had recorded 100 traffic fatalities.
