Two people died in a shooting in the Citadel neighborhood of south Kansas City Monday afternoon, according to police.

Kansas City police officers first responded to reports of shots fired in the 6000 block of Blue Hills Road around 3:30, according to Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a KCPD spokesperson. While on their way, the incident was upgraded to a shooting, DiMartino said.

Responding officers entered a parking lot and found a man and a woman in a parked car, both with gunshot wounds, DiMartino said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical responders, while the woman was transported to a local hospital, where she died shortly after.

Detectives are interviewing witnesses and reviewing security footage from nearby businesses, according to DiMartino. As of Monday night, no suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made.

Monday’s double shooting represents the 141st and 142nd homicides reported in Kansas City in 2024, according to data collected by The Star.

At this time last year, 175 homicides had been reported in the city, according to Star data.
