A juvenile is in custody after Miami County Sheriff’s Office deputies found a dead teenager early Wednesday morning.

Deputies responded just before 3 a.m. to the 22800 block of Lewis Drive on a call for an ambulance. The call was forwarded to the Johnson County Emergency Communications Center, since Miami County does not dispatch paramedics, Undersheriff Matthew Kelly said.

The sheriff’s office stayed on the line and responded to a residence on Lewis Drive about 18 minutes after the initial call. There, they found a teenager inside a home who was pronounced dead at the scene, Kelly said.

One juvenile was taken into custody.

Deputies at the scene requested assistance from detectives. Crime scene technicians from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Crime Lab also responded to process the scene.

Kelly said detectives and crime scene personnel remained on the scene until 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The sheriff’s office has not yet said how the teenager died. A death investigation is ongoing, Kelly said.

No other information was immediately available about the investigation or the juvenile taken into custody.

The teen was found dead in a home in a rural community near Spring Hill, Kansas, about 45 minutes southwest of Kansas City. Lewis Drive is a dead-end road with about half a dozen homes.
