One man was killed in a car fire in south Kansas City Thursday morning, according to the Kansas City Fire Department.

Firefighters responded around 6:30 a.m. to the area of Oak Street and East 83rd Street in Kansas City’s Rolling Meadows neighborhood on a call for a house fire. The call was later updated to a car fire.

When firefighters arrived, they found a car on fire in the driveway of a home and a deceased man also on fire outside the car, said Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins, a spokesman with the KCFD.

The man who was found deceased was 28-years-old, Hopkins said.

The Kansas City Police Department’s Bomb and Arson Squad was called to the scene and is investigating what led to the car fire.

Investigators are working through tips they received around the time of their response Thursday, Hopkins said. Fire department personnel remain on the scene to assist KCPD.

“There was information from callers that we can’t confirm right now that they’ll be working on throughout the day,” Hopkins said.

Any time there is a fatality, KCPD’s Bomb and Arson Squad and detectives take over the investigation, Hopkins said.

The investigation is likely to take some time, Hopkins said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
