A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 29 in Platte County killed an infant and seriously injured a 78-year-old woman Wednesday, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report.

A 2019 Peterbilt semitractor-trailer drove south on I-29 around 3 p.m. in Platte County when it began to skid, then hit the back of a 2002 Toyota Corolla, the crash report said. The collision caused the Corolla to hit the back of a 2022 Freightliner semitractor-trailer, then drive off the right side of the road into a tree line.

The 2019 Peterbilt then hit the back of the 2022 Freightliner, causing it to hit the back of a 2022 Ford F-350, the crash report said.

Paramedics transported a passenger of the Toyota Corolla, a boy under the age of 1, to Children’s Mercy Hospital. Medical staff pronounced the boy dead just before 10:30 p.m. Paramedics took a second passenger of the Corolla, a 44-year-old woman, to a hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Toyota Corolla, a 78-year-old woman, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

According to the crash report, the infant was wearing a safety device at the time of the crash. The report said, it’s unknown if the 78-year-old woman was wearing a seat belt.

The tractor-trailer drivers and driver of the Ford F-350 had minor injuries, the crash report said, and were not taken to a hospital.

According to the highway patrol, the crash is the 65th fatal crash investigated this year by Troop A.

Troop A’s jurisdiction encompasses 13 counties in and surrounding the Kansas City metro.
