Two Kansas City women — twin sisters — were charged in connection to an armed carjacking in Belton this week, according to documents filed in Cass County Circuit Court Wednesday.

Rodnae Gorham and Rodneysha Gorham, both 19, were charged with one count of accessory to vehicle hijacking with a deadly weapon, online court records show.

The carjacking happened after a Kia rear-ended a Dodge Charger on Interstate 49 just before 6 p.m. Tuesday, according to a probable cause affidavit. The victim told police the Kia followed her as she pulled off the highway near 163rd street.

The victim said a female driver of the Kia, later identified by police as Rodnae Gorham, got out and apologized for hitting her vehicle. While they were talking, the victim told police two other people, an unidentified Black man and Rodneysha Gorham, got out of the Kia, the affidavit said.

Rodneysha Gorham then got into the driver’s seat of the Dodge. When the victim told her to get out of her car, the man pulled out a handgun and pointed it at her, the victim told police. Then the man and Rodnae got into her vehicle and drove away, the affidavit said.

Police were able to find the location of the victim’s vehicle with a GPS tracking system installed in the car. Officers with the Kansas City Police Department were notified and found the Dodge parked in front of Rodnae Gorham’s residence, the affidavit said.

The suspects fled the scene in the Dodge and KCPD officers pursued them in patrol cars, the affidavit said. The Dodge was also followed by a KCPD helicopter, the affidavit said, until it came to a stop near 36th Street and Brooklyn Avenue where two women started running from the vehicle.

The two women were arrested and transported to the Belton Police Station.

Rodnae Gorham allegedly told police she was driving the Kia in Kansas City when the unidentified male suspect told her he wanted the victim’s Dodge. She followed the Dodge and crashed into it, court documents said.

She allegedly gave the same account of the carjacking as the victim and said she helped the male suspect with the carjacking because he had a gun and had threatened to hurt her. She told officers she did not know the man’s real name, only his street name.

The man’s street name was not specified in court documents.

Rodneysha Gorham initially told police a different account of the carjacking, saying the Kia was left roadside. When police told her they knew the Kia was not left roadside, she changed her statement and claimed she did not remember who drove the Dodge, the affidavit said.

Rodneysha Gorham also said she was threatened by the man and only knew his street name.

As of Thursday morning, no hearings have been scheduled for either of the twin sisters. No other charges have been filed in connection to the carjacking.
