MoDOT worker dies after being hit by semi-truck on Highway O near Sedalia
A Missouri Department of Transportation employee was killed in a crash with a semi-truck Tuesday, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report.
An 18-year-old man from Hughesville, Missouri, was driving north on Missouri Highway O near Sedalia in a 2005 Peterbilt 379 when the semi-truck hit a pedestrian, 60-year-old Jay L. Bone, according to the crash report. Paramedics pronounced Bone dead at the scene.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the MSHP. Andrew Bell, a spokesman with MSHP Troop A, said in an email that the crash will be thoroughly investigated for a few weeks before determining a possible cause.
Bone, a senior maintenance worker with MoDOT, was working at the time of the crash. Bell said the work zone had typical safety measures in place, including signage and workers providing traffic directions.
Bell said all work zones are unique and require drivers to pay attention when approaching them.
“Slowing down before entering a work zone is important, and being prepared to stop for other motorists or at the direction of the workers,” Bell said.
MoDOT announced on its X account Wednesday that Bone had been with the department since 2015.
“Please keep the Bone family, friends and coworkers in your thoughts.,” MoDOT said in their post.
Troop A of the MSHP shared MoDOT’s post Wednesday.
“Our hearts break for the family of Mr. Bone and the (MoDOT) family,” MSHP said on X.
