New NFL hype video shows superstar Taylor Swift five times. Some fans are grumpy
A new NFL hype video proclaiming that “football is back this week” has football fans keeping score.
The video shows MVP Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens once.
Superstar singer Taylor Swift appears five times in the 28-second video.
Swift, who is dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, is shown at a game with Donna Kelce, chugging a drink at the Super Bowl and kissing Travis Kelce after the AFC Championship Game.
Angry football fans griped about it on social media, where “Taylor Swift 5” trended Tuesday.
“Genuine question, why is Taylor Swift shown more times in this video than anyone in your actual league?” wrote one user.
“I think maybe showing Taylor Swift 1 time is fine, but you did it 5 times which is super weird… I’m gonna bet the intern who made this video is clearly a Taylor Swift fan,” tweeted another.
“Straight down your throat! Not a single football thing in this clip. Only Taylor. All Taylor all the time! This should be taught in CIA torture training. This is peak torture!” complained another, who equated the video with “fingernail pulling” and “waterboarding.”
Huh?
Meanwhile, on the Swiftie side of X, one fan tweeted with glee: “Half the video is Taylor.”
“It’s not Taylor Swift’s fault the NFL decided to put her in that video 5 times lol they’re just milking her fame,” a fellow Swiftie tweeted. “They’re just making everyone who doesn’t like her hate her though.”
Chiefs and Swift fans expect to see her at the league’s season opener Thursday at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, and his teammates face the Ravens in a rematch of last season’s AFC Championship.
If the past is predictor, she will watch from a suite where TV cameras will show her during the game.
Instant replay: That’s what first riled football fans last season when she began attending Chiefs games, even though she had no control over how many times she popped up in TV coverage.
“I’m just there to support Travis,” she told Time magazine in her “Person of the Year” interview. “I have no awareness of if I’m being shown too much and pissing off a few dads, Brads, and Chads.”
Later, one national survey of 1,135 people found that 70% believed Swift had a positive impact on the NFL.
By the end of the season Swift’s impact on everything from viewership to sales of football gear was through the roof, studied by economists and college professors alike.
Just wait until the Chiefs use one of the plays she’s drawn up.
