The motorcyclists killed in a crash early Friday in Grandview were a bartender and former doorman of a downtown Kansas City, The Quaff Bar & Grill posted on social media.

The two persons killed in the crash were 33-year-old Cody Sloat and his 31-year-old passenger Andrea Licata, both of Kansas City, Capt. Ryan Sharp with the Grandview Police Department said in a news release Saturday. Both Sloat and Licata died at the hospital from injuries suffered in the crash.

“It’s with heavy heart that we write this post,” The Quaff Bar & Grill said in a post on Facebook, which said Licata and Sloat had died in a “tragic and horrific motorcycle accident.”

The bar said it was deeply sorry for the loss their immediate family had experienced. It also reminded people to acknowledge their feelings and that reaching out and sharing stories is part of the healing process.

“The Quaff would also like to take a moment throughout this tragedy to remind us all how quickly our friends and family members leave us,” the bar said in the post.

The crash occurred around 2:15 a.m. Friday on southbound Interstate 49 near East 140th Street in Grandview, Sharp said. Both Sloat and Licata were taken to the hospital where Sloat was pronounced dead. Sharp said Saturday that Licata also died from the injuries in the crash.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, but preliminary results indicate that the motorcyclists were using a construction zone to pass other motorists, lost control and crashed, Sharp said.

It did not appear either of the riders was wearing a helmet.
