Motorcyclist killed, passenger critically injured in crash that closed I-49 in Grandview
A motorcyclist was killed, and his passenger was critically injured in a crash early Friday that closed southbound Interstate 49 in Grandview for several hours, a police spokesman said.
Police responded to the crash around 2:15 a.m. on southbound I-49 near East 140th Street, said Capt. Ryan Sharp with the Grandview Police Department.
Arriving officers found a man and woman who were injured in the single-vehicle crash. Both riders were taken to a hospital, where the man was pronounced dead. Sharp said the woman, who is believed to have been the passenger, is in critical condition.
Sharp said it did not appear either of the riders, who are in their early 30s, was wearing a helmet.
A preliminary investigation reveals the motorcyclist was using a construction zone to pass other motorists, lost control and crashed.
While police investigated the crash, southbound I-49 was closed, and traffic was being diverted at 140th Street. Drivers then rejoined southbound I-49 at Missouri 150 highway. The highway reopened shortly before 7 a.m.
The name of the motorcyclist killed in the crash was being withheld until family could be notified.
