An Independence man has been charged with murder in a shooting last Wednesday at an apartment building in midtown Kansas City.

Eryn D. Holt, 21, was charged with second-degree murder for his alleged role in the shooting of 22-year-old Adrian Terry. Holt also faces two charges of armed criminal action, as well as a charge of unlawful use of a weapon. All four charges are felonies.

The shooting took place Aug. 14 at 400 E. Armour Blvd., near the Midtown and Hyde Park neighborhoods. Kansas City firefighters alerted police when they heard gunshots while responding to an unrelated medical call at the building.

Kansas City firefighters took Terry to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:11 p.m.

Holt was taken into custody at the scene of the shooting after witnesses pointed him out to police. One of the responding firefighters said that while attempting to enter the building and check on another resident, he heard Holt and Terry arguing near the entrance to the building, according to court documents.

The firefighter told police detectives that he heard Terry telling Holt he should know better than to come back to the apartments, court documents read. The argument then moved outside the building, where at least three witnesses reported watching Holt shoot Terry in the chest, according to court documents.

There was a second loud sound before Terry re-entered the lobby and collapsed, according to court documents. The shooting was also captured on surveillance cameras in the lobby.

After allegedly shooting Terry, Holt attempted to hail an Uber and leave the area, but he was taken into custody before the Uber arrived, court documents show. Holt told police detectives that he did not know Terry personally and that he believed Terry had been about to stab him as a result of their verbal argument.

A Jackson County prosecutor set Holt’s bond at $250,000, according to court records. If he is released on bond, Holt will have to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet until his trial.

Terry’s death was the 93rd homicide reported in Kansas City this year, according to data tracked by The Star. At the same time last year, 123 homicides had been reported in the city.
