A man has been charged with murder in a fatal shooting at a Northland apartment complex Wednesday morning.

Jaymes D. Henderson, 35, has been charged in Clay County court with first-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm, according to court documents. The shooter and the deceased, 27-year-old Christopher Henderson, may have been brothers, according to online records.

Kansas City police found Christopher Henderson unresponsive at the Ethans Apartments in the 1400 block of Northwest 80th Terrace while responding to reports of a shooting around 6 a.m. Wednesday, The Star reported.

Christopher Henderson was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. While investigating, officers learned about a person of interest — identified as Jaymes Henderson — and found him walking near the crime scene, according to KCPD spokesperson Capt. Jake Becchina.

Police investigators believe that there was some sort of fight or argument between Christopher and Jaymes Henderson, and that Jaymes had fled the apartment right after the shooting, The Star reported.

The killing was Kansas City’s 77th homicide this year, according to data tracked by The Star.

Prosecutors have requested a $1 million bond for Jaymes Henderson, according to court documents.

Jaymes Henderson was previously incarcerated after pleading guilty to burglary in 2014, court records show. Previous charges against Jaymes Henderson also include attempted burglary and violating orders of protection taken out against him, according to court records.
