One patient still critical after mass shooting at Chiefs rally Wednesday: hospitals
After the shooting Wednesday at the end of the Chiefs Super Bowl victory rally that killed one and left 23 wounded by gunfire, Kansas City area hospitals took in at least 39 patients with various injuries, according to hospital officials. Several patients were in critical condition.
Some people fleeing the scene came to hospitals with other injuries besides gunshot wounds, and at least one person was trampled by people in the chaos.
One patient remains in critical condition as of Friday afternoon, according to patient numbers from Children’s Mercy Hospital, St. Luke’s Health System, University Health and the University of Kansas Health System.
Here’s what we know about the conditions of those hospitalized as of Friday evening.
1 patient remains at Children’s Mercy, after 9 children shot
Children’s Mercy took in 12 patients from the shooting, 11 of them were children and 9 were shot, according to Lisa Augustine, a spokesperson at the hospital.
As of Friday morning, just one patient from the shooting remains in the hospital, according to spokesperson Marlene Bentley. On Thursday, the hospital said all 12 patients they treated are expected to make a full recovery.
The University of Kansas Health System has seen two patients with shooting-related injuries, the hospital said Thursday. One was a gunshot wound and the other was trampled as people fled the scene. The health system did not immediately provide an update Friday.
University Health (formerly Truman Medical Center) has seen 12 patients with shooting-related injuries: eight with gunshot wounds, and four with other injuries. As of Friday afternoon, one person remains in critical condition, and two others are listed as stable, according to hospital spokesperson Keith King.
St. Luke’s has one gunshot victim who is improving and no longer in serious condition, according to spokesperson Emily Hohenberg. The hospital has treated one person with a gunshot wound and four others with injuries sustained while fleeing the scene.
The AdventHealth hospital system treated one minor gunshot wound and six other minor injuries related to the shooting. All seven of these patients have been treated and discharged, spokesperson Nicole Fowler said.
Two juveniles were charged Friday in relation to the shooting. The two teens are being held at the Juvenile Detention Center and the Jackson County Circuit Court wrote in a statement Friday that additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.
