How many people were shot, injured at the Kansas City Chiefs’ rally mass shooting?
At least 39 people sustained a variety of injuries at Wednesday’s mass shooting at the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory rally in Kansas City, according to patient numbers obtained from four local hospitals.
Kansas City police said Thursday that 23 people were injured by gunfiire in the shooting, one of them fatally. But some parade goers also sustained injuries while fleeing the scene. The Star has contacted eight local hospital systems and three nearby urgent care centers to gather the data on these casualties.
Here’s what we’ve learned as of Thursday morning.
How many people were injured in Wednesday’s shooting?
According to patient numbers from Children’s Mercy Hospital, St. Luke’s Health System, University Health and the University of Kansas Health System, at least 39 people have sought treatment for injuries sustained during the shooting and subsequent chaos. Not all of these injuries are gunshot wounds.
Hospital officials have told The Star of at least 21 patients who sustained gunshot wounds, and 18 others who were injured in other ways. Of the patients The Star has confirmed with local hospitals, at least three remained in critical condition Thursday morning. That number was down to two in critical condition by Thursday evening.
Hospital data collected so far by The Star may not encompass all 23 people who police say were injured in the shooting Wednesday, and it was unclear if all of those victims had been shot. Meanwhile, fire officials said eight people were critically injured, seven were in serious condition and six had minor injuries.
One of the shooting victims has also been confirmed killed: Johnson County radio host and mother of two Lisa Lopez-Galvan.
Where are the patients being treated?
As of 5 p.m. Thursday, St. Luke’s Health System has seen five patients with shooting-related injuries: one with a gunshot wound, and four with other injuries sustained while fleeing the scene. The gunshot victim is in serious condition as of Thursday evening, according to hospital spokesperson Laurel Gifford.
As of 10:25 a.m. Friday, Children’s Mercy Hospital has seen 12 patients with shooting-related injuries, 11 of them children. One patient remains at the hospital, but all 12 are expected to make full recoveries, the hospital said.
As of 10:45 a.m. Thursday, the University of Kansas Health System has seen two patients with shooting-related injuries: one with a gunshot wound, and one who was trampled in the chaos, according to hospital spokesperson Alexis del Cid.
As of 7 a.m. Thursday, University Health has seen 12 patients with shooting-related injuries: eight with gunshot wounds, and four with other injuries. Two of the gunshot patients remained in critical condition Thursday evening, hospital spokesperson Leslie Carto said.
As of 1:30 p.m. Thursday, the AdventHealth hospital system has seen one minor gunshot wound and six other minor injuries related to the shooting. All seven of these patients have been treated and discharged, spokesperson Nicole Fowler said.
Several urgent care facilities near the shooting, including Spira and Concentra locations, did not receive any patients yesterday. The HCA Midwest hospital system also did not receive patients from the shooting. The Star is still waiting to hear back from the Swope Health and North Kansas City hospital systems.
