Arugula on tacos? How did Mission Taco Joint rate in the hunt for the perfect taco?

Always intrigued by the idea of visiting Mission Taco Joint since I moved here, my attempts were repeatedly thwarted by its perpetual busyness. Fueled by good ratings on Yelp, I finally seized the opportunity to explore it on a quieter day, revealing a nearly empty venue and prompt service.

Standing at the host stand at the chain’s 409 E. 18th St. location, I pondered where to place my order. This wasn’t the familiar casual taco spot I was used to. The host suggested a seat at the bar—an invitation I gladly accepted, sidestepping the need for a traditional table. The captivating decor, featuring lucha libre portraits and a mural of buildings and a robot, added an intriguing touch. The atmosphere continued to unfold as I absorbed the taco vibes emanating from the bamboo-like-inspired chairs and tables.

The presentation of the tacos on a metal tray, each in its own compartment, added a charming touch, solidifying the idea that Mission Taco Joint embraced a more upscale taco experience.

Capturing my attention from the first bite, the addition of arugula to the taco provided an unexpected and distinct taste, catching me off guard and significantly influencing the overall taco experience. Although the gluten-free tortilla was a bit firmer, it played a crucial role in shaping the taco’s texture, adding an extra layer to consider in this taco tale.

The queso fresco, with its rich flavor, flirted with a touch of chewiness. However, the substantial and chunky meat took center stage, demanding my full attention to making certain I chewed it well before swallowing.

Surprisingly absent were the familiar taco companions of cilantro and onions, leaving me yearning for the refreshing balance they bring to a traditional carne asada taco. The avocado serrano sauce, listed on the menu as a sauce rather than salsa, added an extra kick, contributing to the overall depth of flavor. The salsa, left to single handedly carry the taco spice, resulted in a dry, salty experience that lacked the citrusy freshness of lemon and the crisp bite of radish and cucumber.

In retrospect, the absence of these familiar elements highlighted the unique twist Mission Taco Joint brought to the classic gluten-free carne asada taco.
