‘Hidden gem’ Tacos El Gallo delivers on taste. Is this the perfect carne asada taco?

Editor’s note: Star visual journalist Emily Curiel is on the hunt for the best carne asada taco in the Kansas City area. Join this native of Los Angeles in our new video series, “Taco Tales,” as she searches for the taco that checks all the boxes on her list of what’s required for a perfect 10 out of 10.

As I stood on vibrant Southwest Boulevard, the tantalizing scent of Mexican cuisine beckoned me toward Tacos El Gallo. I had heard about this hidden gem through my colleague Anna Spoerre, who could tell I was feeling a bit homesick. “You’ve got to try Tacos El Gallo,” she exclaimed with a knowing smile.

Stepping into the cozy establishment at 806 Southwest Blvd., I was greeted by an explosion of color. Mexican paper maché decorations adorned every nook and cranny, while vibrant piñatas hung from the ceiling. Shelves displayed an array of Mexican goods that you wouldn’t typically find at your neighborhood grocery store. It felt like a little corner of Los Angeles, reminiscent of La Placita Olvera, and I instantly felt a sense of comfort.

Like clockwork, I placed an order for three carne asada tacos and picked them up from the counter. They were ready for my personal touch. The tacos were served with a side of radish and cucumber, adding a fresh and crunchy contrast to the flavors. The salsa bar, an array of options, allowed me to customize my tacos to my heart’s content.

I loaded up my tacos with generous helpings of salsa verde and a squeeze of fresh lime, creating a symphony of tantalizing scents. When I took my first bite, I was instantly transported back to the streets of Mexico. The flavor of the carne asada was fantastic, its tenderness and juiciness made my mouth water at the mere thought of it. Although the carne asada was thinly cut, it managed to maintain its succulence, which was a delightful surprise.

The tortillas were just as I preferred—not too thick, not too thin. Each taco had a double layer, ensuring they wouldn’t fall apart under the weight of the savory filling. Though I forgot to ask the chef to hold back on the oil, I was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t overwhelm the overall experience.

Each taco was carefully crafted with just the right amount of cilantro and onion to complement the juicy carne asada. As I wiped away the last remnants of salsa from my lips, I regretted ordering only three. I should have ordered six, especially since these were the kind you could devour in just three bites, a testament to their deliciousness.

Tacos El Gallo had effortlessly secured its place as my go-to destination whenever I crave the comforting flavors of familiar tacos, the kind that bring back memories and make me smile. This meal was a reminder of the countless joy-filled taco experiences I’ve savored. I couldn’t help but feel a wave of emotion.

The comfort and warmth of this place was so overwhelming, like rediscovering a cherished memory. Thanks to Anna’s recommendation, I had discovered a corner of Mexico in the heart of the city, where the flavors and ambiance provided the solace I needed to satisfy my longing for that familiar taste.
