Police are investigating possible impairment after several people were injured in a five-car collision early Sunday in Kansas City.

Officers responded around 12:40 a.m. to the area of West 36th Street and Wyandotte Street, Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City Police Department, said in a news release.

The 16-year-old driver of a tan Toyota Avalon was traveling north on Wyandotte at a high speed when he failed to stop at a stop sign and hit a westbound traveling Nissan Versa.

Both vehicles were pushed north on Wyandotte from the momentum of the crash, which then caused a chain reaction with three parked, unoccupied vehicles.

The Toyota driver received minor injuries, and his passenger received serious injuries. Neither wore a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The Nissan driver received life-threatening injuries, and his passenger received serious injuries. Both were wearing their seat belts.

Impairment is under investigation as a factor in the crash.
