Crews will begin making repairs Thursday morning to a KC Streetcar track that failed unexpectedly on Independence Day, forcing the streetcar to suspend service, KC Streetcar announced in a news release.

Crews will be working around the clock to make the necessary repairs to the track on a portion of the Main Street Bridge over Interstate 670 in downtown Kansas City.

An investigation into the cause of the rail and track pavement failures are still underway. A preliminary conclusion indicates the failure was likely due to multiple factors, including the track expanding during heat and degradation of the streetcar track slab and related repair materials, the transit agency said.

KC Streetcar plans to release further details about the repair work and schedule in the future.

Meanwhile, the Main Street bridge over I-670 will remain closed as well as the Power and Light District northbound streetcar stop.

RideKC buses will continue to run the streetcar route to provide transit services at intervals of 20 to 30 minutes. The buses will stop at all designated and open streetcar stops.
