Just how hot is it in Kansas City? These everyday, outdoor objects are scorching

It’s so hot outside that (insert your punchline here).

OK. So it’s seriously hot outside and your sense of humor melted earlier this week shortly after the heat index in Kansas City climbed past 100 degrees.

When we hear the weather report on these hot days we hear about the heat index and the actual air temperature. The heat index takes into account how our bodies respond to the humidity that is in the air on sweltering, hot days. The actual air temperature is measured by thermometers that are not exposed to direct sunlight.

We’re advised to take precautions in the heat to avoid all the things that can happen like dehydration, exhaustion and heat stroke.

What we often have to find out on our own on these really hot, sunshiny days is what not to touch when it gets hot like this.

The Star sent visual journalist Emily Curiel out with an infrared thermometer to find out just how hot some things get when the sun is shining on them.

Watch the video to see what we learned.
