A toddler was taken to a hospital in critical condition after being left inside a car at a Lenexa church for hours, according to police spokesman Wednesday.

Officers responded shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday to a church in the 15300 block of West 87th Street Parkway to reports of a young child left alone inside a car, said Officer Danny Chavez, a spokesman for the Lenexa Police Department.

When officers arrived, they discovered that someone had already taken the 22-month-old child out of the car and brought the boy inside the church to wait for paramedics, Chavez said.

A medical crew with the Johnson County Med-Act took the child to a hospital in critical condition, he said.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the child had been left alone inside the car for about 2 1/2 hours. The car was not running and the windows were up, Chavez said.

During that time, temperatures were in the lower to mid-80s at Johnson County Executive Airport, which is about 10 miles away.

The parents of the child were cooperating with the ongoing investigation, Chavez said.

“At this time, there is nothing to indicate that the child was left in the car intentionally,” he said.
