An early blast of summer-like weather will continue in Kansas City Tuesday as temperatures make another run at setting record-highs, according to the National Weather Service.
Temperatures on Tuesday are expected to be around 93 degrees, but the heat index value will make it feel more like 100 degrees, according to the weather service. The record high for this date is 92 degrees, set in 1962.
When temperatures reached 91 degrees on Monday, it tied the record set in 1963, according to the weather service. The near record heat is expected to continue through Thursday.
This blast of heat is unusual for this time of year. Typically, temperatures are in the lower 70s in early May.
While having 90-degree temperatures this early is not unheard of, the average first 90-degree day since 1970 has been May 30, according to climate data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Regional Climate Centers.
Only nine other times in the past 52 years has Kansas City seen temperatures climb this high this early. The earliest was on April 3, 2011, when temperatures climbed to 91 degrees. The latest was July 7, 2004, when temperatures reached 91 degrees.
“Last time Kansas City reached 90 degrees earlier in the season was in 2012 when we reached 90 for the first time on 4/25,” the weather service said on Twitter. “We won’t talk about the rest of that Summer.”
But The Star will.
Temperatures that spring and summer climbed to or above 90 degrees 66 times. On 20 occasions, temperatures were at or above 100 degrees. The hottest temperature that summer was 106 degrees on July 18 and 25.
The 90-degree weather stretched into September of that year, with Sept. 11 being the last time that year temperatures climbed to or above 90 degrees.
Cooler temperatures, along with chances for rain, return on Friday with temperatures returning to near normal on Sunday.
