Cold, wind make for a not ‘particularly pleasant day’ for Kansas City Royals Opening Day

Fans headed to the Kansas City Royals’ Opening Day game Thursday afternoon will want to bundle up as weather conditions for this season’s home opener will be a bit colder than usual for this time of year.

“It will not be a particularly pleasant day for any outdoor activities, much less Opening Day for baseball,” the National Weather Service in Kansas City said in its forecast discussion.

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-40s to low 50s at the 3:10 p.m. start of the game between the Royals and the Cleveland Guardians at Kauffman Stadium.

Strong sustained winds of 25 mph are expected, with gusts up to 40 to 45 mph possible at times. The winds will make it feel more like 40 degrees. Temperatures typically are in the low 60s for this time of year in Kansas City.

In addition to affecting the baseball game, the strong northwest winds could cause any fires that ignite to grow rapidly.

There is a slight chance for some afternoon and evening showers, and maybe a few snowflakes overnight, especially across northwest Missouri.

Although the winds will start to decrease overnight, chilly, cloudy and breezy conditions are expected Friday. A widespread freeze is expected overnight Friday into Saturday morning. This will likely be a hard freeze with temperatures remaining below freezing between 8 and 10 hours, according to the weather service.

The last springtime freeze in Kansas City normally is on April 8th, according to the weather service.
