Driver killed, passenger injured, after losing control on ice and crashing near KCI
The driver of an SUV was killed and a passenger was injured after losing control on an icy Interstate 435 bridge near Kansas City International Airport early Friday, a police spokesman said.
The driver, a 37-year-old Kansas City man, died at the scene. The passenger, a 64-year-old woman, was seriously injured in the crash and taken to a hospital, said Sgt. Bill Mahoney with the Kansas City Police Department’s Accident Investigation Section.
Two other female passengers, ages 28 and 9, were not injured in the crash, Mahoney said.
The crash occurred shortly after 4 a.m. Friday as the Nissan SUV was headed west on I-435. The driver lost control on ice while crossing the bridge over Second Creek near Northwest Skyview Avenue, according to the preliminary investigation.
The SUV slid off the right side of the road and overturned down an embankment.
Westbound I-435 traffic was reduced to one lane while the crash was being investigation. The highway fully reopened at 8:30 a.m.
The driver’s death is the 23rd traffic fatality this year in Kansas City. That compares to 11 by this time last year, according to the Kansas City Police Department.
