Thirteen locations in Kansas City, Overland Park and Independence rank among the deadliest in the metro for car wrecks


In an effort to make Kansas City’s streets safer, the public works department is installing traffic safety measures like speed humps and crosswalks at intersections across the area.

The proposed changes are expected to cost $1.29 million and are part of the city’s Vision Zero initiative, aimed at reducing traffic deaths. The street additions are expected to be completed by March 1, 2023, according to a contract with the city.

Here’s a list of the proposed traffic safety measures:

  • Curb extension at North Kenwood from N.E. 96th Street to 93rd Court
  • Curb extension at N.E. 101st from North Kentucky Avenue to Stark
  • Speed humps at North Cypress Avenue from N.E. Vivion Road to Kensington Ave.
  • Speed humps at North Sycamore from N.E. 48th Street to 51st Street
  • Install raised crosswalk at N.E. 113th from North Oak Street to Main Street
  • Install raised crosswalk at Kensington from East 18th Street to 19th Street
  • Curb extension at Wabash from East 28th Street to East 29th Street
  • Curb extension at Lockridge from Benton Boulevard to Walrond Ave.
  • Curb extension at 27th Street from Oakley Avenue to Topping Ave.
  • Speed humps at Elmwood from 33rd Street to 36th Street
  • Install raised crosswalk at Mersington from Linwood Boulevard to 34th Street
  • Curb extension at Bellefontaine from Linwood Boulevard to 34th Street
  • Chicanes at 39th from Oakley Avenue to Topping Ave.
  • Curb extension at 40th from Norton to Cleveland
  • Curb extension at South Benton from 39th Street to 42nd Street
  • Curb extension at 41st from Troost to Virginia
  • Speed humps at Forest from Brush Creek Boulevard to Emanuel Cleaver
  • Speed humps at Agnes from 43rd Street to 45th Street
  • Install curbs and curb extension at 46th from Indiana Avenue to Askew Ave.
  • Speed humps at Jackson from 43rd Street to 45th Street
  • Speed humps at 43rd Terrace from Elmwood to Hardesty Ave.
