Overturned semitruck closes northeast corner of Kansas City’s downtown loop
Update: The highway reopened shortly before 3 p.m. after crews were able to upright the semi, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Kansas City District.
A crash involving an overturned semitractor-trailer has shut down part of Kansas City’s downtown loop Tuesday morning, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.
The semi overturned about 10:45 a.m. near where southbound Interstate 35 and Interstate 70 split, cutting off westbound traffic along the north side of the downtown loop.
No one was injured in the crash, firefighters said.
Also closed is the ramp from westbound I-70 from northbound I-35 along with the ramp from southbound I-35 to westbound I-70, according to a tweet from MoDOT’s Kansas City district.
The crash was causing southbound I-35/I-29 traffic headed into downtown Kansas City to backup across the Bond Bridge over the Missouri River.
Drivers were being urged to find alternate routes if possible.
The truck was hauling carrying automotive batteries, so hazardous materials crew was brought in, MoDOT said on Twitter.
Several “heavy” tow trucks were brought in about 1:40 p.m. to upright the semi and get it back onto its wheels.
