Kansas City police arrest man following day-long standoff outside Arrowhead Stadium
Kansas City police arrested a man who shot at employees outside Arrowhead Stadium following a more than 6-hour standoff.
The standoff started after 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the southeast part of the Truman Sports Complex parking lot when the man drove to Arrowhead and shot at employees outside the stadium. No one was injured, said Kansas City Police Department spokesman Capt. Dave Jackson.
Jackson said it seemed the man was having a mental health crisis.
“The negotiations were very difficult,” Jackson said. “They really weren’t going anywhere.”
Employees were sheltering in place during the standoff.
Shortly after 6 p.m., police used less lethal weapons to arrest him. The man had handguns and a knife.
Jackson said the man did not meet the criteria for psychiatric evaluation after being evaluated at the scene and was taken to jail. He was arrested on charges associated with the shooting.
“For these officers and the entire police department to maintain their professionalism and handle this very, very dangerous situation,” Jackson said, “and have it end safely is a testament to their professionalism, their training, their supervision and their leadership.”
Police don’t have a motive.
“It’s my understanding that he has no connection to the Chiefs or Royals in any way,” Jackson said.
Jackson said police will investigate where the shots were fired.
