Kansas City metro records over 300 new coronavirus cases as Missouri exceeds 100,000

The Kansas City metro area recorded more than 300 new coronavirus cases for the third day straight Saturday as the state of Missouri exceeded 100,000 total cases.

The area encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas has recorded a total of 34,261 cases of the rapidly spreading virus. On Saturday, 357 new cases were reported.

The seven-day rolling average of new cases in the metro is 270. Last week it was 314. Two weeks ago, it was 348.

Eight new deaths were reported Saturday. Six were reported in Johnson County and two were reported in Wyandotte County. At least 476 people in the metro area have died from the virus so far.

On Friday, Missouri listed 101,134 cases, including 1,704 deaths.

The positive test rate was 8.9%.

Recommendations from The White House Coronavirus Task Force recently indicated that two-thirds of Missouri counties need to close bars and restrict restaurant seating in order to curb the spread of the virus.

When Kansas last reported numbers on Friday there were 48,386 cases, including 511 deaths.

The positive test rate was 10.8%.

Nationwide, the virus has infected more than 6.4 million people, killing more than 193,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.
