Woman on Bird scooter in KC runs red light, is struck by minivan and injured: police

A woman riding an electric scooter and showing signs of impairment ran a red light downtown before a minivan struck her Sunday night, Kansas City police said.

The 25-year-old woman has serious injuries.

According to police, the woman was riding a Bird scooter north in the southbound lanes of Grand Boulevard around 8:40 p.m. before running a red light. A minivan, with a green light, heading east on East 10th Street struck her.

She was taken to a hospital. None of the four people — a driver and three teenagers — inside the minivan were hurt.

Impaired driving laws also apply to electric scooters, police noted. Impaired scooter drivers can be cited with DUI.

Last June, a man was arrested for suspected driving under the influence of alcohol after crashing a Bird scooter into a Kansas City police patrol car.
