19-year-old woman drowns at Liberty sports complex after jumping into retention pond

Searchers pulled the body of a 19-year-old woman from a retention pond Tuesday morning at the Capitol Federal Sports Complex in Liberty, a police spokesman said in a news release.

Dashiza Jordan drowned Monday after she reportedly jumped into the pond at the complex at 2200 E. Old Missouri 210 highway in Liberty, said Capt. Andy Hedrick, a spokesman for Liberty police.

It is the third reported drowning death in as many days in the Kansas City area. On Saturday, the body of a 5-year-old was recovered from Longview Lake and an 11-year-old drowned in the Kansas River.

A cousin of Jordan called 911 about 2:50 p.m. Monday saying that she was driving past the sports complex when Jordan began to panic. The cousin pulled over and Jordan got out of the car, jumped into pond and did not come out of the water, Hedrick said.

Liberty police and fire departments responded to the area and could not find her. The Kansas City Fire Department and the Missouri Highway Patrol also responded to help with search and recovery efforts.

The search was suspended overnight. Members of the highway patrol found her when the search resumed Tuesday and pulled her from the pond.

So far this year in Missouri, there have been 31 accidental drownings on state and private waters, which compares to 44 by this time last year, according to data collected by the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Last year, there were a total of 66 accidental drownings in Missouri.
