Search and rescue teams in Kansas City, Kansas, find body of 11-year-old girl

Search and rescue teams in Kansas City, Kansas, recovered the body of a girl who drowned in the Kansas River on Saturday.

The girl was identified Monday night as 11-year-old Rebecca Van Sui Par, said Nancy Chartrand, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department.

The Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department sent two rescue boats out after receiving a call from a boater.

The girl was found about 6:15 p.m. Monday near the western bank of the river under the Turner Diagonal Bridge, Chartrand said.

On Saturday afternoon, Van Sui Par was playing near a sandbar in the Kansas River when she was sucked under the surface as she went to get a beach ball, the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department said over the weekend.

One adult and two juveniles attempted to help the girl, but also ended up needing rescues.

Multiple agencies searched for her for six hours. The efforts turned into a recovery later Saturday.

Boat teams worked for five hours Sunday, but the girl was not located.

A preliminary investigation indicates Van Sui Par died in an accidental drowning, but the incident remains under investigation until an autopsy.
