Kansas City, Kansas authorities search for 11-year-old girl in Kansas River

Kansas City, Kansas, emergency crews were searching for an 11-year-old girl who was sucked into the Kansas River on Saturday afternoon.

The Kansas City, Kansas, police and fire departments responded to Interstate 435 and Woodend Avenue just after 3:30 p.m. on a drowning call.

A family was playing with a beach ball near a sand bar in the Kansas River, according to a news release from the police department. The ball was hit to an area of the river with a rapid current and undertow.

When the 11-year-old girl went into the water to get the ball, she was sucked under the water’s surface.

An adult and two other minors tried to save her, but ended up also needing to be rescued.

The girl has not been found. Crews are now trying to recover her body.
