Driver seriously injured after hitting utility pole and slamming into tree in KC

A driver was critically injured early Monday when his a car left the road at high speed, struck a utility pole and slammed into a large tree in east Kansas City, according to Kansas City police.

The crash occurred about 2:45 a.m. Monday at East 51st Street and Sni-A-Bar Road, according to an email from Sgt. Jacob Becchina, a Kansas City Police Department spokesman.

The driver was traveling west on 51st Street at a high rate of speed in a burgundy Hyundai Accent when the car left the roadway. The car hit a utility pole, shearing it off, and then crashed into a large tree, Becchina said.

The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered life-threatening injuries in the wreck.
